The doctrine of eternal hellfire didn't start to take official, solid shape until the time of Justinian. The pseudo-Christian doctrine of soul sleep was invented much later in history. Nobody in the Christian world believed in the idea of eternal endless punishment in hell fire prior to about 200 a.d. Even then most Christians rejected it and the majority believed in universal restoration of all things by God's grace. The modern religions give the choice between two gods: Their divine Hitler, who will roast you in an eternal Auschwitz crematory; Their diving Jack Kevorkian, who will strap you into the eternal gas chamber and put you to permanent sleep.
