Nonsense. STAUROS meant "cross" and not "upright pole." A upright pole
without a cross-brace or cross-beam was called, MONOS STAUROS. The word
STAUROS by itself without adjective signifies a pole with a
cross-member. Thus a tree, or fence post, or ship mast, or torture
cross were all called, STAUROS. Meanwhile a straight pole without a
cross-member was prefixed with MONOS, making it MONOS STAUROS.

Your folk etymology is just false.
