Yes the Catholic church is wrong about purgatory. And you are also
wrong about purgatory.

A man doesn't go to 'purgatory' after he dies.

Mankind has already died and gone to 'purgatory':

Revelation 19:20
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought
miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the
mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were
cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

The 'lake of fire and brimstone' in the Greek is a refiner's crucible.
The 'basanos' is the touchstone for testing the gold being refined in
the fire. The brimstone is used to separate the impurity (sin) from the
gold (heart).

Revelation 20:14
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second
 death.

The 'second death' is described as an 'age of ages.' It is a succession
of ages in God's plan from the beginning. Those not found worthy are
cast into this age of burning along with all the falsehoods they love.

Jesus said God will thrust all men into this fire:

Mark 9:49
For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be
 salted with salt.

The word, 'salted' here means 'preserved' or 'saved.' Jesus is saying
those cast into hell will be 'salted' or 'saved.' Oh, yes, that is
exactly what he means. And he warns everyone that it will be extremely
unpleasant:

"And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to
enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be
cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not
quenched. For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice
shall be salted with salt."

In essence Jesus is telling men to quickly prepare to struggle with
their sin and unbelief, or else God will force them to deal with it in
trial by fire. And these many centuries since have been that age of
trial by fire.

The Old Testament teaches about this copiously:

Ezekiel 22:18
Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are
brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they
are even the dross of silver. [metal refining is done with brimstone]

Ezekiel 22:20
As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into
the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so
will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you
there, and melt you. [metal refining is done with brimstone]

We see here the true meaning of the pool of fire and brimstone referred
to in the book of Revelation. God in his wrath, casts the unbelieving
nations into a new age, full of war, suffering, contention, and
insanity, to 'melt' all the souls and teach them the consequences of
their idolatry and unbelief. That age is now. It is not in the
'afterlife' but in this present reality.

Deuteronomy 4:20
But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron
furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as
 ye are this day.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were cast into the fiery furnace. But
because of their faith in God and the Son of God, not even the smell of
the smoke touched them. They came out of the fire unhurt because their
was no impurity in them that fire could burn.

If you have the impurity of unbelief, idolatry, and false religion,
then you will continue to suffer during this cycle of ages until you
are 'melted' from the heat.

This is what the metaphor refers to. The Christian interpretation of
endless torment is a lie and a slander against the character of God.
God the Father finds the idea of torturing someone forever, especially
in fire, to be absolutely sickening and repugnant:

Jeremiah 32:35
And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the
son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through
the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into
my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

Christians actually believe and teach that Jehovah will sacrifice
sinners to Molech, for all eternity!

But God does not cast anyone off for eternity:

"For the LORD will not cast off for ever: But though he cause grief,
yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men."

God does cause grief to nations that rebel against him. But he does not
boil them in oil and charcoal for eternity. He 'burns' them with grief
and calamity to teach them their error. When the burning is done, he
gives them yet another chance to return to him:

Zechariah 10:6
And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of
Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy
upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I
am the LORD their God, and will hear them.

God has all eternity to play this game of cat and mouse with mankind.
He has all the real power and he holds all the aces. The infernalists
and annihilationists don't know the character of Jehovah. He is
longsuffering and he forgives his enemies. If his enemies will not
repent and turn to him, he sends them into the furnace to 'melt' in the
heat caused by their own pride and vanity, and causes the necessary
calamities to show his wrath at sin, so that souls will be convicted of
sin and repent.

In the end every soul will bow to Jesus Christ and God the Father. Not
one soul in all of creation will continue in the rebellion. Every proud
and obstinate heart will have its part in the lake of fire and
brimstone until pride and rebellion are utterly burnt out of them.

The Christian doctrine of an Auschwitz volcanic BBQ pit for souls is
a lie. The JW doctrine of annihilationism is a monstrous lie. Both are
wrong. God created man to have eternal life, and man will have eternal
life through the Lord Jesus Christ. All your religious attempts to
limit God's salvation to those who give allegiance and money to your
sectarian tribe are a patent racket.
